GETTING MARRIED THE PROCESS
Meeting
The process typically begins with you meeting your favourite Celebrant, where you sit down and discuss your wedding, your ideas, and the kind of atmosphere that you envisage for your ceremony. Once you are confident that you are on the same page and that you can confidently trust that Celebrant to deliver the kind of ceremony you have in mind, you can proceed to completing the marriage paperwork.
The Paperwork
To get married, there are a number of forms to be completed, your Celebrant will provide these and happily talk you through them.
Most importantly, the Notice of Intended Marriage form (NOIM). This must be signed and witnessed by your Celebrant no later than one month before the date of your wedding.
Writing your personalised ceremony
After talking through what you would like your ceremony to look like, and asking lots of questions, most Celebrants will write a personalised ceremony for you. Many Celebrants will give their couples the opportunity to proof read, edit and personalise their ceremony further if they wish. The only components that must be included and not altered is the legal wording.

Overseas couples marrying in Australia
You don’t need to be an Australian citizen to enjoy a wedding at one of Australia’s most beautiful locations. Many couples travel to Australia to get married. Australian Celebrants are authorised by the Attorney General to perform marriage ceremonies anywhere in Australia, the options of where you choose to become husband and wife are endless.
When choosing your Brisbane wedding location you really are spoilt for choice with Brisbane’s lush botanical gardens, golf clubs and Parklands. The perfect Celebrant will happily guide you through this process and make some great suggestions of where to wed.
If you are eloping to Brisbane for your wedding you will need to have 2 witnesses over the age of 18, present during the ceremony.
If you are an overseas couple marrying in Australia, and you can’t be in Australia one month prior to the wedding (1 month before the date of your wedding is the minimum time in which the NOIM must be completed and lodged with your Celebrant by Australian law). The Notice of Intended Marriage form can be signed outside Australia in which case it must be signed in the presence of either:
– an Australian Diplomatic Officer; – an Australian Consular Officer; – a notary public; – an employee of the Commonwealth authorised under para 3(c) of the Consular Fees Act 1955; – an employee of the Australian Trade Commission authorised under para 3(d) of the Consular Fees Act 1955.
If you are based overseas and marrying in Australia, with the time differences, you may find that most communication including finalising the ceremony and confirming the details can easily be managed via email. The other legal documentation known as the ‘declaration’ can then be completed in the presence of your Celebrant on your arrival in the country which is also when your passport and any other relevant ID will need to be sighted and recorded.
We recommend you contact your countries marriage registry to confirm if your marriage will be recognised in your home country and to confirm any additional legal documentation they may require to recognise your marriage.
VOW RENEWAL CEREMONIES
– For those who are already married and wishing to reaffirm their love and commitment.
– For those who have eloped overseas and want to hold a ‘second wedding’ at home.
– For those who have been through difficult times and want to reaffirm their commitment to each other.
– For those who have reached a certain milestone for example their 5 or 10 year wedding anniversary, or simply ‘just because’.
It is becoming increasingly popular for legally married or formally committed couples to declare their commitment and reaffirm their wedding or commitment vows to each other. This can take place on their wedding anniversary or any date they choose. Couples who have eloped or who have had a very small ceremony often choose vow renewal ceremonies as part of the larger celebration after the wedding.
Australian law doesn’t recognise vow renewals, however it is a great opportunity for you to focus on celebrating the success of your relationship and if you wish, to involve your family and children within your ceremony.
Vow Renewal ceremonies tend to follow a similar structure to weddings, however, without the legal requirements, you have as much flexibility as you wish to adapt your ceremony structure and wording to reflect yourselves and your relationship.
COMMITMENT CEREMONIES
– For couples who want to show their commitment without a legal marriage.
– For same sex couples
– For couples who can’t be legally married because they are waiting for their divorce to be finalised or for religious, family or other personal reasons.
By having a commitment ceremony, you are acknowledging the uniqueness and commitment of your relationship. This is the perfect way to celebrate your relationship with those close to you. A commitment ceremony will show everyone present how much you mean to each other.
Commitment ceremonies are very similar to weddings, essentially following a similar structure, however, as it is not legally binding the legal wording is excluded and you have as much flexibility as you wish to adapt your ceremony structure and wording to reflect yourselves and your relationship.
